No, I haven't gone off the deep end by starting to use Microsoft Office, this is about my office. Upon advice from my accountant, and thi really great article about having a home office:
How To Work At Home part 1: Getting Started
by my friend Doug Bell from PlainBlack, I began the quest for a home office. First I had to pick a room. The IRS says that the room has to be used exclusively as an office, which left every room in the house out except for two:
The Shed
The shed has great privacy and a beautiful view, but it has no electricity and is only 6'x8'.
The Storage Room
The Storage Room is a much better option. It's bigger, inside the house, has electricity and heat, but has a few drawbacks. There's no view, except for the inside of the garage, and it's full of stuff.
Stuff could be moved out into the garage, except we never finished it, which means it's cold, damp and drafty. These conditions are bad for stuff made of any material. So, for the last three weeks, we've been working on finishing the garage.
First, with the help of Michael Fraser, we hung drywall on the ceiling of the garage. It helped a lot to have someone so knowledgable and skilled to help me. It also helped to have a drywall lift. If you don't know what this is, consider this. A sheet of drywall weighs approximately 70 lbs according to Google. Imagine you and your friend holding this over your head while juggling drills and screws, and you'll know what a drywall lift is for.
Then the insulation people from AllWeatherization came and did a great job insulating the ceiling and walls of the garage. Two teams came in and each spent about 30 minutes on their part. They were quick, professional, and very competitively priced.
Then Michael came back and we hung the walls. Now my wife Kathy is out in the garage mudding and taping. That's just the division of labor in the house. I hang, she muds, and then I paint.
I ordered a desk, which arrives later this week on Wednesday, which only leaves a chair and chair mat. I found an excellent one at Costco, but I'll be price shopping at Office Depot.
Next week, I'll publish some before and after pictures as work in the office starts.
